I used to give my photography away to friends who needed head shots for various things but couldn’t afford it. Until someone said to me: “When you give your work away, you are telling the world you don’t value it very highly.” So a friend at a non-profit film place asked me to take pictures for free at an event for Louis Malle. I REALLY liked his films, so I said yes. Then I called back and told her, “You have to pay me something, even if it’s just 10 bucks.” She said: “OK, how about 10 bucks?” So I photographed Louis Malle for 10 bucks and was invited out to dinner with the whole group and sat next to him all night!
